Irving Berlin wrote “God Bless America” in 1918 but put it aside. In 1938 as World War Two was starting in Europe, he made some changes and it was recorded by Kate Smith. It became and remains immensely popular. I have always considered it a very beautiful song. I hope that my expansion of the song to include a second verse that embraces all of humanity is not seen in any way as me being critical of the original song or of the good things that Americans and America herself has brought to the world. I wrote the second verse in January of 2007. Here are both verses plus the original preamble.

“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.”
God bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Through the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam.
God bless America, my home sweet home.
God bless humanity,
All of us here.
Shine among us, and through us
With a light that's so bright and so dear.
With our kindness, and our sharing
We bring true love to us all.
God bless humanity, each one and all.
